Description
Delicious and hearty stuffed cabbage rolls filled with a savory mixture of ground beef or lamb, rice, and seasonings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef or lamb
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Cabbage:
- Carefully remove the core from the cabbage head.
- Boil the entire head in a large pot of salted water for about 5 minutes until the outer leaves are tender.
- Gently peel the leaves and set them aside to cool.
- Prepare the Filling:
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- Sauté the onion and garlic until the onion is translucent.
- Add the ground beef, paprika, salt, and pepper, and cook until the meat is browned.
- Remove from heat and mix in the cooked rice.
- Assemble the Rolls:
- Lay a cabbage leaf flat, and place a few tablespoons of the meat mixture in the center.
- Roll up the leaf, tucking in the sides to secure the filling.
- Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
- Cook the Rolls:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce on the bottom of a large baking dish.
- Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish, and pour the remaining tomato sauce over the top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour.
- Garnish and Serve:
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to brown slightly.
- Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture.
- If you like it spicy, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the filling.
- Ensure the cabbage leaves are tender before stuffing, as this makes rolling easier and prevents tearing.
- You can prepare these a day ahead; they often taste even better the next day after the flavors meld together.
