Description

Delicious and hearty stuffed cabbage rolls filled with a savory mixture of ground beef or lamb, rice, and seasonings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cabbage:
    • Carefully remove the core from the cabbage head.
    • Boil the entire head in a large pot of salted water for about 5 minutes until the outer leaves are tender.
    • Gently peel the leaves and set them aside to cool.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
    • Sauté the onion and garlic until the onion is translucent.
    • Add the ground beef, paprika, salt, and pepper, and cook until the meat is browned.
    • Remove from heat and mix in the cooked rice.
  3. Assemble the Rolls:
    • Lay a cabbage leaf flat, and place a few tablespoons of the meat mixture in the center.
    • Roll up the leaf, tucking in the sides to secure the filling.
    • Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
  4. Cook the Rolls:
    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce on the bottom of a large baking dish.
    • Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish, and pour the remaining tomato sauce over the top.
    • Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to brown slightly.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture.
  • If you like it spicy, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the filling.
  • Ensure the cabbage leaves are tender before stuffing, as this makes rolling easier and prevents tearing.
  • You can prepare these a day ahead; they often taste even better the next day after the flavors meld together.
