Description
A delicious dessert featuring layers of creamy custard sandwiched between golden puff pastry and dusted with powdered sugar.
Ingredients
Scale
- 500 ml whole milk
- 100 grams granulated sugar
- 50 grams cornflour (cornstarch)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 50 grams unsalted butter
- 1 package puff pastry (approximately 500 grams)
- 1 egg yolk (for glazing)
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Prepare the Custard:
- In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until small bubbles form around the edges (do not let it boil).
- In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar and cornflour. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, and continue whisking until smooth.
- Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring continuously until the custard thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in the butter until melted and smooth. Let it cool slightly.
- Prepare the Puff Pastry:
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into two equal-sized rectangular sheets.
- Place one sheet on a lined baking tray and prick it with a fork to prevent it from puffing too much.
- Pour the cooled custard over the pastry sheet, spreading it evenly.
- Place the second sheet of pastry on top of the custard. Press the edges to seal.
- Glaze and Bake:
- Beat the egg yolk and brush it over the top layer of the pastry for a golden finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden and crisp.
- Let it cool to room temperature before slicing into squares.
- Serve:
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
- Serve the squares warm or chilled.
Notes
- For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard.
- Ensure the custard is cooled slightly before assembling to avoid making the pastry soggy.
- Use a sharp knife to slice the squares to maintain clean edges.
- Store leftovers in the fridge and consume within 2 days for optimal freshness.
