Description

A delicious homemade jam made from fresh ripe black mission figs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb. fresh ripe black mission figs
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tsp orange zest
  • pinch of salt
  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the figs, remove the stems, and cut into quarters.
  2. Place them into a bowl of a food processor and pulse several times until mostly smooth (but not completely pureed—you still want some texture).
  3. Transfer the blended figs to a medium-sized pot. Add in the sugar, water, lemon juice, orange zest, and salt.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a gentle bubble.
  5. Simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring frequently until the fruit is soft and the juices begin to thicken with a jam-like consistency.
  6. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
  7. Carefully spoon the jam into a small clean jar, leaving some clearance from the top for expansion.
  8. Loosely seal with the lid, but don’t tighten completely. After it’s completely cool, tighten the lid.

Notes

  • Store the jam in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
  • This jam works great as a topping for toast or as an ingredient in various desserts.
